It would be fun to speculate what features Apple brings to the iPhone that could revolutionize the cell phone industry? My guess is 1) ease of use in updating contacts, calendar, emails 2) iPod music integration 3) high quality 640x480 mpeg4 videos and 4) leveraging in flash memory pricing
Good post. I'm still waiting for a phone that will easily (and thoroughly) sync with my Address Book and iCal, and I'm on the mac platform. So even some of the features you describe would be of immediate value to a lot of mac users.
But I'm guessing a slick phone that made it easy to have one's songs, contacts, and calendar always at hand would be a major force in the "Switch" campaign as well. Imagine if the phone/iPod windows users were using in the future could also do all those extra things--from the mac platform. I think a lot would find that irresistable.

I bought the new Bob Dylan album a few days a go from the iTunes store. It comes with some bonus tracks that are videos of some older songs. I was listeningto the album yesterday, streaming the audio to the Airport Express connected to my stereo.
After it played the last song on the album, when it got to the videos, all of a sudden itunes stopped streaming the data to my AE, and started playing thru the PB speakers. I certainly didnt expect it to do that, but it did make me wonder:
Are we about to see a new piece of tech that will allow those videos to stream as well as the audio?

The rumors talking about the iPad 3 are mostly saying it would be a different model than the current iPad. There's multiple Macbook Pros. Don't be surprised if there are multiple iPads, like an iPad pro.
There are already multiple iPads.....18 of them to be exact. Why would u think Apple would want to add to this already rediculous number. This whole idea about a iPad pro line needs to stop. It doesn't make sense. It's only 2011. Want an iPad pro.....get an AIR.

Never buy an apple product!!!
As soon as you do something new and better comes out!!!
AAAHHHHHH
I am typing this away on my new Macbook, Core 1 Duo; which i bought under the self-brainwashed reasoning that the MBP alone would see 2x2. Why you ask? Cuz I figured hey, the MB JUST came out, why refresh it every 2 months! The MBP has been out like 8 months, that makes sense.
I can only PRAY I am right.
No that my Macbook will be instant crap... I just COULD have waited until september.
Damn you apple...
Don't worry, I say this now -NO MBP CPU UPDATE AT WWDC- or till December for that matter. MBP itself has its own issues to be fixed like overheating, battery life and slower superdrive. I would be happier if they fix these issues instead of putting slightly faster chip and producing more heat and moans. And even if they do, you won't see big difference in performance anyways. So just enjoy your MB while it lasts.

Not sure what everybody is so worried about, I'm sure the phone needs to track some kind of historical information to give an accurate position. As long as accurate positioning information is not sent to Apple, is there really a problem?
yes there is a problem. because it's unencrypted and everyone with access to your phone can read the information. the software tool they published showed my travel of the last 6 month quite accurately.
I don't want someone picking up my phone from my desk at work and find out what trips to what company I did. (it works internationally btw)
also I don't think the IRS or other tax collection agencies need to know when I was where.:D

Hopefully the iPhone will a handy cell phone...
Software::
- Mac OS X (mobile version)
- iTunes
- iPhoto
- Quicktime
- iChat
- Safari
- Skype (downloadable)
Hardware::
- 3 - 5 megapixel camera w/auto-focus (photo taking)
- VGA (front of phone for video conferencing ... similar too the ones found in iMac / Mac Book / Mac Book Pro)
- Touchscreen
- WiFi
- Bluetooth
- GSM / HSPDA (3.5 G)
- 8 Gb NAND Flash
- 3" Colour Display
Would be nice to be able to have a Mac Book / Mac Book Pro of sorts too fit in your pocket?! Or is that just me?
I would throw away my Nokia N80 and get that.
One thing hopefully it be similar to a Nokia N61. If so plus with the stuff I posted, it would destroy any multimedia phone on the market. Plus would be smaller than an OQO.

Maybe they want the iPhone and iPod Touch to come out at the same time?
They are almost the same product.

Funny to see you are basing a $4000 computer purchase on a $79 piece of crap-KEA furniture - LOL. I'm with you on Yea Apple!
Nothing wrong with a good ol' bit of Ikea furniture...as long as you stick with the higher quality (I.E non particle board) stuff they are decent...minus the assembly instructions...they should be burnt!

Wait, so they should be able to clone a competitor's product's industrial design as long as they don't undercut the competitor's price?
No, my point is they're not designed to be marketed and sold as cheap knock off that confuse customers.
Anyone can tell them apart, just from the bottom button alone if nothing else.

There will be a free version of mobileme, if only to save people having to register for a free AIM account to video conference on the new iPhoneHD.
You know, this makes a ton of sense.

That's why they are, little by little, switching into the iOS experience... I'm quite inclined towards Lion being the last OS X version where the user will still be able to install applications on its own. The next one... I'm afraid... will be fully AppStore oriented... and that's when we will see the first jailbroken computers in history :D
No, there's some more time for that one. But trust me, in our lifetime, we will witness a true closed PC marketspace, for all OS's, not just Mac OS. But those devices won't be called PC's anymore. The entire industry will go there, not just Apple. In 15 years or so, our whole computing will be done on the cloud and we will only have consoles at home, not CPU's. Many things will change. So being afraid of it is in vain.

I'm on a 3G with a contract that ended in Feb. Why are people fliping out that their contracts are ending and a new phone is not available? From what I've been told, my contract is now month-to-month until I upgrade my phone. Even if it was under two years, I can still upgrade my phone. Granted, that locks me down for two more years, but I'm happy with AT&T and the iPhone. What's the worry?
Thank you for posting that. I was wondering if you could go month-to-month after your contract expired. So now all of the complaining about expiring contracts seems to be nothing but noise.

From Wikipedia:
Samsung: Net income US$ 8.33 billion (2009)
Apple: Profit US$ 14.01 billion (FY 2010)
Apple's profits are higher but that's because they spend about $8 billion less on R&D than Samsung ;)
Apple's profits are higher because they waste less money on fruitless enedevaours. Sad with all that spend, Samsung still had to copy Apple.

something to remember about product update cycles:
iSight iMac G5 came out in October '05, Intel iMac came out just 3 months later... in January '06.
just thought I should remind everyone.

whats better sophos or kaspersky for mac?
Sophos. Kaspersky has no heuristic detection and is a lot heavier on system resources. And, Sophos is free.

Just wanted to add, for everyone reading a lot into shipping dates etc., I ordered mine on Sep 11 and got the notice of delays, then notice it was shpped out today (was planning on cancelling after this news).
Now, it will probably be around the 25th before I get, and I won't open it, but considering I have upgrades (so customization = no return) how hard do you guys think it would be for me to exchange it for an updated one?
What was the estimated ship date when you ordered?
As of now, 17'' have an extimated ship time of 7-10 business days.

Just ordered with the X1900 upgrade, memory upgrade, and Bluetooth. Says three to five weeks to ship.
If I check the order status twice a day, will that make my system ship faster? :)Two 1 GB Sticks are only $386 from Third Parties. (http://www.wiredzone.com/itemdesc.asp?ic=32003196&source=froogle)
2x1 = 2GB = $386 vs Apples 4x 512 NOT 6x 512 = + $386 Plus the One GB from Apple for total of 3GB.
4x1 = 4GB = $772 vs. Apple's $990 Plus the One GB you get base from Apple for total of 5GB.
I think you really should change your order to base ram and add TWO 1GB sticks for only $386 for a total of 3GB to begin with for only $116 more than the cost of TWO from Apple taking up only 4 slots. :)
When you buy 2 GB (4 x 512) from Apple you are paying Apple $270 for ONE GB (because you get ONE GB Base anyway) Instead of $193 per ONE GB from Third Parties plus the ONE it comes with no matter what.
$386 MINUS $270 = $116 for that first GB it comes with. See?

Talking about the cost of swtiching, I might just add Stepping out onto the moon cost a pretty penny too. I guess beating the Soviets to bragging rights in space was more important than implementing common sense on the ground.
What does that have to do with anything?
Even if this was somehow relevant, yes, it probably was more important to achieve a scientific feat at that point in time. The Apollo missions created generations of people who became interested in science, raised educational standards nationwide, and brought forth thousands of advancements that we still use in our daily lives.
Hang on You're not distancing yourself from the illiterate masses now? I thought you agreed with them? ;)
Not with their reasoning. My scientific literacy is pretty good, and I don't have an inherent mistrust of science which many Americans do. This makes them resist things that are advocated by the scientific community, whether it's evolution, vaccination, or evidence-based medicine. So when scientists clamor about changing to the metric system, it raises two questions in the minds of people; 1) Why should I trust this person? and 2) Is the change really necessary?
I don't doubt scientists when they advocate for the metric system, in science. Howeve, since most of the advantages of the metric system are really reserved to the sciences, the question of whether or not everything in life should be metric really isn't a scientific one; it's an economic and convenience one. In my daily life I do not need to easily convert between the mass of water and its volume or take temperatures relative to the boiling point of water.
Well, I assume the US population ain't getting any smaller the longer you put it off.
No, but that doesn't mean that we should transition now either. It all depends on the ease of transition. This is why I think long term transitioning is the only real option available. Do things piecemeal in order of greatest economic return, and if there is no economic return on a particular item, forget it. There's no point in switching to something that is going only cost money; at some point there needs to be a positive return for it to make sense.

I Doubt Merom Supplies Are Off Allocation Yet It's Unlikely Apple Can Get All They Need yet. Therefore MacBook will get Merom later and mini last.
Indeed. The big question is when they can update the MB?
Santa Rosa is currently expected no earlier than April. Assuming the MB's can't get Merom til, say, December, is it worth going C2D for ~4 months? (Assuming Santa Rosa is on-time -- which, to be fair, Intel's been pretty good at lately).
If the current enclosure is viable for Merom, then probably, but any late? Difficult to say.
The mini's probably less of a risk in that sense, and doesn't use CPUs in the same speed-range as the notebook systems, so it wouldn't surprise me to see it move up to C2D at the same time as the MB. I agree before the MB seems unlike for commercial reasons.
